Teach Your New Puppy

Posted on 03 November 2008 by admin

A cute puppy is so much fun to have around the house, except for the stubborn way it endlessly runs around or messes with the furniture and nibbles on objects.

Puppies must be trained right away to be able to belong and be treated like any other member of the family.

Puppies are much more adorable when they easily obey and do some tricks, like running a plight of stairs or willfully submitting to a leash even if the collar is a new experience.

For a puppy to be acquainted with family members, each member of the household should welcome the new pet in a less agitated or excited way so as not to incite fear in the little dog. This is one of the reasons why some animal experts do not encourage giving out baby animals like kittens and puppies as gifts during the holidays because there is too much commotion happening around that can make the pet restless. Instead, let these happy days pass first before you give out your living present as your newest member of the family.

As a new family member, a puppy should also need to learn a few things when being allowed inside the house. One basic and important trick a puppy must do is going up and down the stairs. Little dogs see the stairs as a huge challenge since they fear they do not know how to move their body properly when using the stairs. Just like teaching a little child to climb up the stairs, you need to start at the bottom and introduce your pet to every step. Build confidence in your dog and your puppy will soon feel it and begin to take each little step. Guide your puppy by going up and down the stairs with him. Do this repeatedly until your pet learns.

Building a puppy’s confidence requires encouragement and you can do this using treats or toys. Your puppy can even take your voice as a signal to obey your command.

Aside from the stairs, teach your puppy to wear a collar. Many puppies are actually scared when something is attached to their body. That is why you see them pawing and tugging the collar off when the thing is latched onto them.

Get a suitable collar for your puppy according to his size for more comfort. A buckle type collar is a good choice, where there must be an ID and license attached to it. This will get your dog back in case you lose your pet. Once you placed the collar on, let the puppy do whatever he likes in reaction to the leash. Do not scold your pet, but soothe him instead. Distract your puppy away from minding the collar by playing with him or giving him a treat.
